Walnut Tree Barn
Wake up to open fields, end the day in the hot tub
Walnut Tree Barn sits quietly in the Mid Devon countryside beside the River Yeo. Step out of the door and you’re on footpaths through open farmland, with the market town of Crediton close by and Exeter within easy reach.
Inside, the barn is light, airy and made for being together. Vaulted ceilings and exposed beams rise over a sitting room with plush corner sofas and a crackling open fire, while underfloor heating keeps everything warm. In the kitchen, a generous island with bar stools is the natural place for morning coffee while someone else cooks, and the dining table has room for everyone to sit down together.
There are four en-suite bedrooms, each with its own character, and zip-link beds that can be made up as large twins or a super king double. Sleeping eight in comfort, or up to nine with a Z-bed, it suits family holidays and long weekends with friends alike.
Outside, the walled garden has a private hot tub with uninterrupted views over the fields, ideal for a soak after a day on Dartmoor or at the coast, or for stargazing on a clear night. There’s a pergola with a large dining table, a barbecue, sun loungers and plenty of lawn.
Dog friendly: up to two dogs are welcome.
Hot Tub
Your own private hot tub sits in the walled garden, with nothing between you and the Devon fields beyond. Soak in the sun on a summer afternoon, watch the stars come out on a clear evening, or slip into the warm water on a crisp winter morning. Whatever the season, it’s the best way to end a day on the moors or the coast.
Kitchen
The kitchen is the heart of the barn. A bold dark island sits at its centre, with plenty of workspace for cooking and five comfortable stools for anyone who wants to pull up a seat. Skylights fill the room with daylight, and in the evening the under-cabinet and floor-level lighting makes it warm and inviting.
Integrated appliances keep everything looking clean and streamlined, and it’s fully equipped for a houseful, with a dishwasher, two fridges and a freezer, so there’s room for everyone’s food and drink. Someone can pour a coffee on a slow morning, or a glass of wine while dinner is on, and still be part of the conversation.
Bedrooms
Four en-suite bedrooms, each with its own character and a space that’s entirely yours. Calming grey and silver tones set the mood, and vaulted ceilings give every room a lovely sense of space. Every bed is comfortable, so you can count on a good night’s sleep.
Every room has its own en-suite, so there’s no queue for the bathroom in the morning. Couples, families and groups of friends can each have their own space to retreat to.
Dining
Gather everyone around the solid wood farmhouse table, which comfortably seats groups of eight or nine, with bench seating that keeps everyone close. It’s the kind of space where a lazy breakfast turns into a second pot of coffee, and a shared evening meal stretches on long after the plates are cleared. A globe chandelier hangs above, an antique oak dresser adds a bit of character, and warm wood floors and soft neutral walls keep it feeling relaxed.
Pocket doors lead through to the lounge. Slide them fully open and the two rooms become one big space where nobody is left out of the conversation, or close them to give the lounge its own quiet corner for a film or a drink.
Lounge
Two plush corner sofas and two armchairs mean there’s a comfortable seat for everyone, however big the group. In the evening, light the open fire, put a film on the large smart TV, and settle in for the night. Exposed beams give the room its character, and large windows fill it with light during the day.
Large patio doors open straight out onto the patio and garden, so in warmer weather you can step outside with a drink and bring the evening out with you.
Garden
Step out through the patio doors and the garden is yours. Beneath the wooden pergola, a large dining table is set for long, leisurely lunches with friends and family. In the summer months there’s a barbecue too, so you can cook outside and eat al fresco. Settle into the comfy lounge seating with a glass of something bubbly, or stretch out on a sun lounger along the patio and let the afternoon drift by.
Beyond the patio there’s plenty of open lawn, with space for everyone to spread out, play or simply enjoy being outdoors. When the day winds down, the private hot tub is waiting, day or night, with the Devon countryside rolling away beyond the garden.
Crediton
Crediton and the Creedy Valley
Just down the road, the market town of Crediton sits in the Creedy Valley, a proper, unpretentious Devon town full of character. Wander the high street browsing independent shops, pick up local produce from the food producers, and if your stay falls on the first or third Saturday of the month, join the locals at the farmers’ market for something to take back to the barn for supper.
Exeter
Exeter is just a short drive away, a lively city where history and modern life sit side by side. Start at the magnificent Gothic cathedral, then stretch out on the sunny Cathedral Green and soak up the atmosphere.
Head down to the Historic Quayside for an easy afternoon by the water. Browse independent shops, antique dealers and art studios, then settle into a riverside pub or restaurant and watch the day go by.
Back in the centre, there’s plenty for shoppers, from the contemporary Princesshay quarter to the cobbled, independent charm of Gandy Street. With excellent restaurants and a lively events calendar, it’s a day out that’s easy to stretch into the evening.
Coast
Just under 30 minutes away, Exmouth has two miles of golden sand where the Exe Estuary meets the sea, and it’s the gateway to the UNESCO Jurassic Coast. Try your hand at paddleboarding or watersports, or simply stroll the seafront with an ice cream.
Carry on along the East Devon coast and there’s more to discover: the elegant Regency town of Sidmouth, with its clean beaches and dramatic red cliffs, the charming fishing village of Beer, and pebbly Branscombe beach. All lie along the fossil-rich Jurassic Coast, so it’s worth keeping an eye out for finds as you wander the shoreline.
If you’re in the mood for something wilder, North Devon’s coast is around an hour and a quarter’s drive away. Award-winning Woolacombe Beach and surf haven Croyde offer miles of golden sand backed by dramatic dunes, a favourite with surfers and walkers alike. Pack a picnic and make a full day of it.
Dartmoor
Dartmoor National Park is around 30 minutes’ drive away, a vast, unspoiled moorland of granite tors, ancient woodland and free-roaming ponies that have grazed these hills for thousands of years. Pull on your boots and step into one of the most striking landscapes in the country.
Walkers are spoilt for choice. Climb the iconic Haytor Rocks for sweeping views across the moor, or head for wilder routes taking in tors like Sharpitor and Leather Tor. Wander into moss-draped Wistman’s Wood and it feels like stepping into another world, while the ancient clapper bridges at Postbridge and the Bronze Age settlement of Grimspound give a glimpse of the moor’s deep history.
Stop for lunch in Widecombe-in-the-Moor, where the “Cathedral of the Moor” church, tearooms and craft markets make a welcome break. For a gentler outing, Burrator Reservoir has an easy, family-friendly woodland walk with plenty of spots for a picnic.
